The time has come; now comes the first Model United Nations (MUN) of this semester in Iceland. Forum Politica is a proud supporter of the IceMUN society, and encourages everyone to participate in all its activities.

The first MUN this fall, MenntoMUN will be held the coming weekend, starting with registration, lectures and presentation of the conferance on Thursday the 28th, and the first sessions will be held on Friday the 29th.

Its topic will be the situation in Lebanon, which is closely described in the backgroundguide, written by yours truly. The conference was intended for high school students, but since there are still places available university students are invited as well. We particularly encourage foreign students to participate as the conference is in English and it gives you an excellent opportunity to meet Icelandic students both from high school and university level, and to practice and improve your English skills.

For more info check out their webpage at www.menntomun.wordpress.com.

Please feel welcome to ask questions about the conference either by email or by using the Cyber Debate.

Hope to see you all there!

First meeting of Forum Politica held!

Wednesday the 20th, students gathered for the first meeting in the new debating union Forum Politica. Thanks to the good show-up, two full debates were held, with both lively and strong arguments from all participants making it both entertaining and interesting for all.

The first debate, featuring a team of debaters put together to perform a demonstration discussed the sale of alcohol within supermarkets in Iceland. The complexity of this issue became clear as our well-prepared debaters made strong and passionate speeches for their cause, spurring reactions from both sides worthy of the British Parliament itself.

Following this, all participants enjoyed free pizza and refreshments offered by Politica, Orator, Magus and Icemun, while Jon Stewart and the Daily Show entertained us from the big screen with their take on world politics.

In the final debate a whole new team of debaters of voluteers from the audience discussed Reality Shows, and whether or not government money should be given to their production. Despite our speekers having almost no time for preparation, they performed with great confidence and strenght and again succeeded in creating a debate that was as much fun as it was interesting.

We thank all who came for their contribution to Forum Politica, and hope that those who did not have the opportunity to join us this time will do so at the next meeting, which will be announced here on this page and by emails as soon as it is ready! Stay tuned also for more interesting videos at the video pages, rules and outlines for the Security Council debates and the Althingi debates as well as more news and debates on the Cyber Debate.

Forum Politica, the first debating union of the University of Iceland.

Introduction meeting will be held at Wednesday the 20th of September at 6 pm/18:00 in Oddi 201.

The meeting will be divided in two parts. The first one will consist of an introduction of the debating union and then a demonstration debate. The demonstration debate will have as its topic the sale of alcohol in supermarkets, and will four volunteer students as debaters. Go to the “Rules of Debate” page to see details on how the debate will be conducted.
In the last half people will be given the opportunity to participate themselves, and take the first steps towards improving themselves as debaters and public speakers. The topic here will be announced in the break between the debates and people may sign up then.

We hope that the meeting will be over before 20:00, with two debates each at 34 minutes, a 20 minute break and a short introduction.

Unfortunately, the meeting and debate will be held in Icelandic, but later debates will be held in English, and we therefore encourage foreign students to come to get to know the association. Food and light refreshments will be served in the break between the sessions. Entrance is of course free, and the meeting is open to all students.

Again, this is an introductory meeting, where we hope as many as possible will show up. Such an association has never existed before within the university, and it has been sorely missed. This is first and foremost for rehearsal and training, and we emphasize that we are all new at this, so the meeting will be informal and relaxed.

Hope to see you there!

Welcome!

For the first meeting in Forum Politica that is going to be on the evening of Wednesday the 20th of September, we need 4 people willing to participate in the first debate that night. We need a Prime Minister, a Minister of the Crown, a Member of the Opposition, and a Leader of the Opposition. Topic will be announced in good time before the debate, and we will sit down and go through it all with you before the debate starts, so there should be no reason to fear.

See the page called “Rules of Debate” for a detailed description on how the debate works.

The debate will be held in Icelandic!
